Robert Hefferan walking into history as Ireland's third gold medalist at a World Athletics Championship.
Following his disappointment at missing a medal at the 2012 Olympics, where he finished fourth,
Robert gave an outstanding performance in Moscow to win his first major title. His time, although the
fastest in the world for 2013, was still two seconds slower than his best - set ironically in London
which "only" got him a fourth place.
The other Irishman to win a gold medal was Eamonn Coghlan in the 5000m at the first
World Championships in Helsinki in 1983. The date – 14 August – the same date as the Moscow
50km Race Walk .
Sonia O'Sullivan was Ireland's only other gold medalist at a World Championship.
