The photo above shows the finish of the womens 4x100m final at the
2007 World Championships in Osaka. Veronica (lane 7) narrowly lost out
to the USA's Torri Edwards in the race for the gold medal, the American
prevailing by 3 hundredths of a second. Kim Gevaert (lane 6) anchored
the Belgian team home to a bronze medal. This silver medal capped off a
fine championship for Campbell, having already won gold in the 100m and
silver in the 200m.

The race action photo above shows the closing few metre of the
womens 200m final at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. Veronica
(2nd left) turned in a fine performance to win the silver medal in a
seasons best time of 22.34 secs. The USA's Allyson Felix (centre of
photo) took gold in a time of 21.81, with Sri Lanka's Susanthika
Jayasinghe (out of shot) winning bronze. The left hand photo above shows
Campbell acknowledging the crowd shortly before the final whilst the
top row pictures show the Jamaican in full flow during the heats. It
proved to be an exceptional championships for Veronica who, in addition
to this 200m silver, also struck gold in the 100m (see previous page)
and for good measure then added a second silver medal in the 4x100m
relay. . |

Photos of the 100m final taken by George Herringshaw on 27th. August 2007 ©.
The right hand photo above shows a delighted Veronica Campbell
celebrating her gold medal success in the final of the womens 100m at
the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. The race finish pictures show the
closing few metres of the final, with Campbell, the 200m gold medallist
at the 2004 Olympics, pictured second from the left in the bottom inset
photo. In an incredibly tight finish, Veronica pipped the USA's Lauryn
Williams (2nd right in the bottom inset picture) to the gold medal
despite both athletes clocking the same time of 11.01 secs. The two
athletes then suffered an agonising 5 minute wait for the result as race
officials struggled to seperate them, but it was Campbell who finally
got the nod. Another American athlete, Carmelita Jeter (bottom inset,
far left), finished just 1 hundredth of a second behind in third place.
Campbell later commented of her victory: "I was very confident - even
when we did not know the result of the photo-finish - because I know
that I have got excellent top speed and a strong finish. This medal
means a lot to me and the title is important for my career. The title of
world champion was missing in my collection. It was a very competitive
race. I just feel great. Now I have to focus on my 200 metre heats
tomorrow." Those heats would also go well for Veronica and she would go
on to add a silver medal in the 200m and, for good measure, a further
silver in the 4x100m relay. |
