Asbel KIPROP - Kenya - 2008 Olympic Games 1500m champion.

The main photo above shows Asbel (2287) crossing the line to win silver - his first medal at a major championship - in the final of the men's 1500m at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Bahrain's Rashid Ramzi (1256) won the gold medal, with New Zealand's Nick Willis (all black) winning bronze.

The bottom right inset picture shows Kiprop leading the way during the very early stages of the race, whilst the left hand photo shows the Kenyan during the heats. Kiprop later commented: "I saw him coming in front of me and I had a plan of maybe kicking him in the last 200. But I couldn't. He's a great man. Losing to he is not a big deal."

This description was written at the time.  In November 2009, Ramzi was stripped of his gold medal. He had tested positive for CERA, an advanced version of the blood-boosting drug EPO.
