The main photo above shows a delighted Catherine Ndereba crossing the
line, arms outstretched in triumph, to win gold in the womens Marathon
at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. The inset picture shows the
delighted Kenyan proudly flying the flag in celebration shortly after
her victory.
In a close finish Catherine held off the challenge of
China's Chunxiu Zhou by just 8 seconds, with Japan's Reiko Tosa only a
further 10 seconds behind. Ndereba later commented:
"This marathon was
one of the hardest in my running career because the weather was a
challenge. I was amazed to see, at 39 kilometres, that there were more
than three runners (in the lead group) and I could not think I was going
to win the gold medal. After 40 kilometres I felt I had something left.
I tried to push it a little bit harder and I was able to maintain the
pace up to the finish line."

The main photo above shows Catherine, arms aloft, as she crosses the
line to win the silver medal in the womens marathon at the 2005 World
Championships in Helsinki. Ndereba put up a brave defence of the title
she had won two years previously but, despite running nearly two minutes
quicker in Helsinki than in Paris, she was unable to stop Britain's
Paula Radcliffe claiming gold. |
