At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he finished 7th. (2:13:30).
Wainaina frequently competed in Japanese races, he was a two-time winner of the Tokyo
International Marathon, having taken the title in both 1995 and 2002.
He also won the Hokkaido Marathon on three separate occasions and the 2003 Nagano Marathon.
