Nick Willis is pictured above during the heats of the men's 1500m at
the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Willis, the 2006 Commonwealth 1500m
champion, went on to reach the final and produced a fine performance to
win the silver medal in a time of 3.34.16. A memorable moment for Nick
then, whose silver medal success saw New Zealand, who have produced some
truly great middle distance runners in the past, return to the 1500m
podium for the first time at the Olympics since John Walker's gold medal
run at the 1976 Montreal Games. Willis later commented: "This is huge
for New Zealand and for athletics in general. We have such a rich
tradition.... to get a bronze, to me, means just as much." He later was given the silver medal
after RAMZI was tested positive for the blood-booster CERA and was disqualified on November 18, 2009.
