He qualified for the final, finishing fifth in a time of 20.14 secs. It was in the 100m
that Obikwelu really excelled however, winning the silver medal in a new European
record time of 9.86 secs (see below).

The race finish pictures above show Francis (lane 5) crossing the line to take the silver medal in the men's 100m at the
2004 Olympics in Athens. Justin Gatlin (lane 3) won the Gold with Maurice Greene (lane 7) taking bronze. Obikwelu's time of 9.86
was a new European record, eclipsing the previous best of 9.87 held jointly by Great Britain's Linford Christie and Dwain Chambers.
