Francis Obikwelu is pictured above (lane 5) cruising to victory in the
final of the mens 100m at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg.
Obikwelu took the gold in a new championship record time of 9.99 with
Russia's Andrey Yepishin (lane 6) taking silver and Slovakia's Matic
Osovnikar (lane 3) the bronze. It was the first part of a sprint double
for Francis as he later won the 200m gold and it also meant he retained
the 100m title he had won four years previously. Photos George herringshaw © August 8th. 2006
