With a name almost that of the Country where she did it, Mariya Kuchina added the World outdoor
high jump title to her 2014 World Indoor Championship when she won the women's high jump
competition in Beijing. In a tense final she beat 2009 champion Blanka Vlašić by virtue of making no
failures up to 2.01m , as the two battled for the gold medal. They both failed three times to clear 2.03,
but because Vlašić took a second jump to clear 1.92m Kuchina won. Ironically Vlašić cleared 1.92m
first time in the qualifying round. Anna Chicherova failed twice in reaching 2.01m.
She later married and became Mariya Lasitskene.
