The left hand photo above shows Yelena during her first vault of 4.50m in the womens Pole Vault final at the
2005 World Championships in Helsinki. The pictures on the right show the Russian setting a new World record
of 5.01m, meaning she finished a remarkable 41cm clear of her nearest rival Monika Pyrek. Isinbayeva had won
the gold medal when Pyrek, in attempting to overtake Yelena's mark of 4.70m,
failed at 4.75m. Less than a month earlier Isinbayeva had become the first woman
to clear 5 metres during a meeting at London's Crystal Palace.
Remarkably, Yelena's new mark of 5.01m was the 18th World record of her
glittering career, a phenomenal achievement when one considers she had only
just turned 23 by the time of the 2005 World Championships.
