Carolina is pictured above during various disciplines of the
Heptathlon at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg. A sign of
Kluft's class was that despite not being quite at her best, due to a
niggling injury, she was still far to good for the opposition and won
the gold medal with a championship record total of 6740 points, 317
clear of her nearest rival Karin Ruckstuhl. The fact that Carolina was
not quite at the very top of her game could be seen when comparing her
total of 6740 points to her winning scores of 7001, 6952 and 6887 at the
three previous major championships (2003 Worlds, 2004 Olympics &
2005 Worlds). Kluft's victory meant that she retained the title she had
first won four years previously in Munich and it also extended her feat
of holding Olympic, World and European titles concurrently, something
very few athletes have achieved. |
