The right hand photo above shows a delighted Elvan Abeylegesse (3045)
celebrating after crossing the line to win the silver medal in the
women's 5,000m final at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Tirunesh Dibaba
(1659) won the gold medal, the third occasion that Elvan had finished
in second place behind Dibaba at a major championship, although their is
certainly no shame in playing second fiddle to such a great athlete as
the Ethiopian. The main photo shows Abeylegesse leading the field just
ahead of Dibaba with 800m to go.
TEN YEARS LATER (!) in 2017 she lost both medals following a re-analysis of an in-competition doping test dating back to 2007.
