At the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Ashton Eaton set a new World Record for the decathlon of 9039, breaking Roman Šebrle's
score of 9026 points set in 2001, at Götzis. He also beat Dan O'Brien's American record of 8891 points set in 1992.
He thus became the second athlete to score over 9,000 points. At he U.S. trial he ran a 10.21 100 metres and long jumped
8.23 (27 feet) both, as at the Olympics, 1,000 plus scoring events.
In March at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbulhe improved his own heptathlon World Record
of 6568 with a new score of 6645.
