Brad WALKER - U.S.A. - 2005 World Champs Pole Vault silver (result)

The photo above shows a delighted Brad clearing 5.75m during the final of the mens Pole Vault at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki. He was the first athlete to clear the height and with only three other competitors left to vault it meant the clearance gave him every chance of a medal. Sure enough, Pavel Gerasimov and Igor Pavlov failed their three attempts at 5.75m, thus ensuring Brad of at least the silver medal. Walker then failed with his first attempt at 5.80m and when Rens Blom cleared the same height Brad moved up to 5.85m. The American failed both attempts at the new height, meaning Blom took the gold and Walker the silver; a fine achievement for Brad in what was his first final at a major championship.
