The race action pictures above show the closing few metres of the
mens 110m Hurdles at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. David (far
right), the bronze medallist at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka,
won the silver medal in a seasons best time of 13.18 secs, with Cuba's
Dayron Robles (centre) winning gold and Payne's compatriot David Oliver
(left) the silver. The left hand photo shows David watching a television
replay of the race, in which he pipped Oliver to the silver medal by
just 1 hundredth of a second.
Payne would later describe
Robles as a "phenomenon" but added that he was happy to win a silver
medal to go alongside the bronze he had captured at the 2007 World
Championships in Osaka. He commented: "I wasn't 100% this year. I had a
lot of setbacks. I wanted to stay up with Robles but he left us behind.
He's amazing and could not be stopped." Payne added: "One day very soon,
I'm going to go with him and hopefully beat him."
