John is pictured in 1976 the year of the Olympic Games in Montreal. He won the bronze medal there
with a throw of 65.70m, behind compatriot Mac Wilkins and East Germany's Wolfgang Schmidt.
Powell had the misfortune to miss the next Olympics due to the USA boycott of Moscow but he did
pick up another bronze medal when the games were held at Los Angeles in 1984.
Three years later, by which time John had passed 40 years of age, he won a silver medal at
the 1987 World Championships in Rome.
