Liliya NURUTDINOVA - U.S.S.R. - 1991 World 800 metres Champion. 1992 Olympic silver.

The photo above shows Liliya (713) about to cross the line to win the 800m Gold medal at the 1991 World Athletics Championships. To her left is Cuba's Ana Quirot who won the silver medal, with the bronze going to Romania's Ella Kovacs who is in yellow. A young Maria Mutola - who would go on to dominate the event at future World Championships - is no. 520.

Lilia Nurutdinova is pictured above crossing the line behind Holland's Ellen van Langen to win the 800m silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. It proved to be her last championship medal and completed a set of gold, silver & bronze following her medals at the 1990 Euro Champs & 1991 Worlds. Competing for Russia at the 1993 World Champs Liliya suffered the disappointment of being disqualified in the final.

At the 1993 World Championships in Athletics Nurutdinova tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol

and she was subsequently disqualified and handed a 4-year ban from sport.
