Solicitor Andrew Hilditch came into the Australian side at the time of World Series Cricket and so impressed with his leadership skills he was earmarked as a future Test captain. He captained the team in the field following injury to Kim Hughes in only his second Test. He returned to the Test scene with a century in 1985 and looked as if he would fulfill those early prophecies, but fell foul of a tendency to hook Ian Botham unwisely (see photo above 1st July 1985 photo G. Herringshaw.) and the soul-searching that followed Australia's unforeseen Ashes defeat that year. Hilditch made his debut for New South Wales in 1976-77 and made his Test debut against Mike Brearley's England side in 1978-79. On debut he fell victim to the erratic running of his opening partner, the 'Kamikaze Kid' Graeme Wood, and was run out for 3.

He made 62 in the second innings against Pakistan in Melbourne later that summer and went down in cricket history when he was given out "handled ball" in the next Test in Sydney. He was at the non-strikers end and picked up the ball after a wayward return from a fieldsman and went to hand it to bowler Sarfraz, only to be given out on appeal. In India, with Kim Hughes team in 1979-80, he made 55 at Madras, 62 in Bangalore and 85 in New Delhi, but he did not appear again until he replaced John Dyson in the closing stages of the West Indies visit to Australia in 1984-85, scoring 70 and 113 in a drawn game.

In England in 1985 he made 119 and 80 in the first Test at Headingley, followed by 47 in the third at Trent Bridge and 49 and 40 at Old Trafford. In the World Cup of 1979 he made 47 against England at Lord's and 72 against Pakistan in Nottingham. (Bob Harragan)
