| Bob is pictured above during his excellent spell of 30-14-47-3 in
Australia's 1st innings of the 1st Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham in
June 1981. England lost a low scoring match by 4 wickets but bounced
back to win the series 3-1 with Bob enjoying his finest hour in the
never to be forgotten 3rd Test at Headingley that summer. Thanks to Ian
Botham's magnificent innings of 149 not out, with fine support from
Graham Dilley (56) and Chris Old (29), England had somehow managed to
set Australia 130 to win. They looked to be cruising at 56-1 before Bob
took centre stage and produced a tremendous spell of hostile fast
bowling to return Test best figures of 15.1-3-43-8. England won the
match by 18 runs in what will surely go down as the most remarkable
comeback in the history of Test match cricket. An interesting aside was
that at one stage during the 4th day England were 500/1 to win the match
and both Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh placed bets on them to do so! |
