The batting pictures above show Ian in full flow during his remarkable innings of 149 not out against Australia in that never to be forgotten 3rd Test at Headingley in 1981. Botham came to the wicket at 105-5, with England still trailing the Aussies by 122 runs, and when Geoff Boycott and Bob Taylor departed with the score still only at 135 the match looked dead and buried. Things were to change in dramatic fashion, however, as Ian, with magnificent support from first Graham Dilley (56) and then Chris Old (29), took the score up to 356 all out. Botham smashed 27 fours and 1 six on his way to scoring 149 off just 148 balls, his century taking just 87 balls. Australia were left requiring 'just' 130 runs for victory and, despite that man Botham removing Graeme Wood with the score on 13, they looked to be cruising having recovered to 56-1. That is, however, until Bob Willis took centre stage and, bowling like a man possessed, ripped through the Australian batting order to return the incredible figures of 15.1-3-43-8 and secure, surely, the most remarkable comeback in the history of Test match cricket. An interesting aside was that at one stage during the 4th day England were 500/1 to win the match and both Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh placed bets on them to do so! The left hand photo shows Beefy taking a well earned break (with cigar!) at the end of play on the 4th day following his heroic efforts. To his right is Chris Old, another of the days heroes, enjoying a post match pint! (David Scranage)
