Michael Atherton pictured above during the drawn 2nd Test against
India at his home ground Old Trafford in August 1990. England were
unable to bowl India out a second time (despite Athers sending down a
total of 20 overs in the match!), the tourists closing on 343-6 with a
young Sachin Tendulkar making a match saving 119 not out. Atherton was
thought of as a promising leggie in his early days but back problems
meant he was forced to give up bowling relatively early in his career.
Mike enjoyed a memorable Test match with the bat in this particular
game, scoring 131 and 74. His opening partnership of 225 with Graham
Gooch (116) would prove hard to match for future England openers and it
was not until the 2nd Test of England's 2004/05 tour to South Africa
that two England openers (Strauss & Trescothick) would make
centuries in the same innings. |
