(Gordon is pictured above during his splendid knock of 134 in the West Indies 1st innings of the 3rd Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester in July 1976. Greenidge's innings was all the more important given that the majority of the West Indians failed with the bat (the remainder of the top 5 - Fredericks, Richards, Kallicharran & Lloyd no less - managed just 6 runs between them) and his 134 was nearly two thirds of the overall total of 211 all out. If England thought that put them in control they were in for a rude awakening however, as they were skittled for a meagre 71 off just 32.5 overs, Michael Holding returning the remarkable figures of 14.5-7-17-5. Clive Lloyd did not enforce the follow-on, preferring instead to make England toil in the field as the tourists ran riot to score 411-5 declared, with Gordon racking up a second century (101) of the match, sharing century stands with Roy Fredericks and Viv Richards in the process. The home side fared little better second time around, Andy Roberts doing the damage with a terrific spell of 20.5-8-37-6 as England slumped to 126 all out. That meant the West Indies comprehensively won the match by 425 runs to put them 1-0 up in the 5 match series and further victories in the final two tests saw them clinch a 3-0 win. Greenidge enjoyed an excellent series with the bat in that blazing English summer of '76, his 10 innings yielding 592 runs at an average of 65.78. Gordon took a particular liking to English bowling during his Test career, his average of 50.39 in 32 matches significantly better than his overall average of 44.46.)
