(Gordon is pictured above during his excellent innings of 106 not out (173 balls) in the group game against India at Edgbaston, Birmingham in the 1979 World Cup. His efforts helped the West Indies record a comfortable 9 wicket victory, having earlier dismissed the Indians for 190 in 53.1 overs. The West Indies went on to beat England in the final, thus defending successfully the trophy they had won at the inaugural 1975 tournament, although Gordon suffered the disappointment of only making 9 before being run out by Derek Randall in the Lord's showpiece. In his only other two innings of that World Cup Greenidge scored 65 and 73 against New Zealand and Pakistan respectively, meaning he finished the tournament with an average of 84.33.)
