Gus LOGIE - West Indies - Test Profile 1983-91

Little Gus Logie had a long apprenticeship with the West Indies, being the reserve batsman on tour for several years. He would make the ODI team more than the Test side in his early years, being a regular in the World Series tournaments in the mid 1980s. On the rare occasions the West Indies top order would fail bowlers' hearts were usually broken by a big stand between Logie and Jeff Dujon. Logie made his debut for Trinidad in 1978-79 and toured Zimbabwe with Young West Indies in 1981-82. He made 130 against India at Bridgetown in 1982-83 and 97 against Australia in Trinidad in 1983-84, but did not get a Test in England in 1984 despite being second in the first class averages with 364 runs at 72.80. He had to wait for the retirement of both Clive Lloyd and Larry Gomes for a regular spot. He made 101 in Calcutta in 1987-88 and 80 against Pakistan in Georgetown in 1988. At Lord's in 1988 he made 81 and 95 not out. As he usually batted at number six he had little chance to go on to big hundreds and was often left in the 80s & 90s. There was 93 at Perth in 1988-89, 98 against England at Port of Spain in 1990, as well as 87 against India at Port of Spain in 1989 and 78 at Trent Bridge in 1991. In the World Cup of 1987 he made 65 not out against Sri Lanka at Green Park in Kanpur and in the 1992 competition made 61 against South Africa in Christchurch. (Bob Harragan)
