Joel Grner is pictured above during the group game against India at
Edgbaston, Birmingham at the 1979 World Cup. He chipped in with 1-42
from his 12 overs to help restrict the Indians to 190 all out from 53.1
overs and the Windies went on to complete a comfortable 8 wicket victory
thanks, in the main, to a fine 106 not out from Gordon Greenidge. The
West Indies went on to beat England in the final - thus retaining the
trophy they had won at the inaugural 1975 event - and Garner was at his
best to return the fantastic figures of 5-38 from 11 overs. Only a truly
memorable performance from the 'master blaster' Viv Richards - who
scored 138 not out - denied Garner the man of the match award. |
