Larry is pictured above sharing a joke with England's Allan Lamb and Ian
Botham during the 3rd Test at Headingley, Leeds in July 1984. Gomes was
on his way to compiling a fine century at the time and he carried his
bat to finish on 104 not out off 197 balls. For once the West Indies top
order had struggled (messrs Greenidge, Haynes, Richard, Lloyd and Dujon
managing only 117 runs between them) so Larry's knock proved all the
more vital and ensured the Windies finished with a 1st innings lead of
32 in reply to England's 270. The home side were then dismissed for just
159 second time around - Malcolm Marshall the destroyer in chief with
the stunning figures of 26-9-53-7 - and the West Indies went on to
record a comfortable 8 wicket victory.
