After playing an integral part in Luton Town's phenomenal 1994 FA Cup
run, which took the Hatters to a Wembley semi-final, John Hartson became
the subject of admiration for many Premier League teams. Finally, in
January 1995, the powerful striker signed for Arsenal in a £2,500,000
deal. At just 19 years of age Hartson promised much, fans and pundits
alike seeing the Welshman as a fitting replacement for Alan Smith. John
had originally impressed at Luton Town with his power and determination.
However, the attribute that appeared to set him apart from other target
men was his subtle touch, something lacked by many big strikers. The
commanding figure blended with deceptively delicate technique offered
what many saw as an ideal long-term partner for Ian Wright
. The
promising Welshman arrived at Highbury during a period of unprecedented
turbulence at the club. Hartson was just one of a batch of signings made
by George Graham that were viewed by many as a series of desperate
attempts by the flagging Highbury legend to save his job as well as
Arsenal's unusually poor season. Unfortunately for George Graham he was
sacked for his part in the high profile bung scandal, just over a month
after Hartson made his debut against Everton. Although not sensational, 7
goals in 15 league appearances suggested that John could offer genuine
substance to match his obvious potential. The dismissal of Graham was
followed by Bruce Rioch's stint at the helm and the signing of Dennis
Bergkamp. After Hartson's initially encouraging start his contribution
for his remaining season and a half with the Gunners was limited.
John
found himself below Wright and Bergkamp in the Highbury pecking order
and only managed a further 9 goals in his time in North London. Changes
in the Marble Halls soon manifested themselves on the field of play. The
introduction of Arsene Wenger and therefore a shift in tactics rendered
the need for an old-fashioned target man moribund. Hartson only managed
5 months in the Wenger era, eventually being sold to West Ham United
for £3.2m in February '97 after playing a total of 53 league games for
the Gunners. (Ben Smith)
