ENGLAND CAREER - 19 GAMES.
|
Arsenal midfielder Peter Storey, one of the less compromising players of his era, made his England debut in the unusual position of right back in April 1971, as Alf Ramsey's men defeated Greece 3-0 in a European Championship qualifier. Shortly afterwards, Storey was in the Arsenal side which clinched the League and FA Cup 'double', and won further caps in his preferred 'ratting' position just ahead of the back four. Although a good footballer, Peter's reputation was not blessed with cleanliness and Ramsey seemed aware of this, not committing himself to making Storey a first choice midfielder, and once Colin Bell returned from injury in 1972 that seemed to be that for his chances of playing in his natural club position. Storey was reverted back to the No.2 shirt through 1973 before briefly returning to the midfield for the 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat against Poland in Chorzow. He was crucially dropped, after playing eleven successive internationals, after a subsequent 2-0 friendly defeat to Italy and never returned, with Ramsey switching Bell to the holding role and giving the flamboyant Tony Currie a go, just in time for Poland's visit to Wembley. After that result, it appeared Storey was better off to be dropped when he was, although he would never come back after the dust had settled. (Matthew Rudd)
After retiring from football he was convicted of various criminal offences including keeping a brothel and was jailed for three years for financing a plot to counterfeit gold coins. He was married four times and had three sons and one daughter.
