With financial difficulties at the club - a consequence of several

relegations (three in three seasons) - Merrick became one of the

legendary 'Ashton Gate Eight' who saved the club by ripping up their

contracts and taking redundancy on 3rd February 1982.

The Ashton Gate Eight:  Geoff Merrick, Chris Garland, Trevor Tainton,

David Rodgers, Gerry Sweeney, Jimmy Mann, Peter Aitken and Julian Marshall.

Geoff Merrick grew up just ten minutes’ walk away from Ashton Gate and was

taken to matches there by his parents from the age of seven.
