With financial difficulties at the club - a consequence of several
relegations
(three in three seasons) - Tainton became one of the
legendary 'Ashton Gate Eight'
who saved the club by ripping up their
contracts and taking redundancy
on 3rd February 1982.

Transferred to Torquay United in February 1982 for whom he played
19 League games and scored one goal.
After retiring from football he worked as a security officer at the
Oldbury Nuclear Power Station.
