A Sunderland supporter as a boy, Chris finally joined the Black Cats in
March 1997 after two unsuccessful trials with the club early in his
career. Sunderland's loss was Newcastle's gain as Waddle went on to
enjoy a splendid spell at St James' Park, resulting in moves to
Tottenham and then Marseille, the latter a £4, 500, 000 deal which made
him the third most expensive player in the world. Despite the fact he
was 36 years of age when he finally joined the club Chris still showed
plenty of the old magic. He was, however, unable to stop the slide into
the First Division and moved on to Burnley as player/manager in the
