Crystal Palace's nippy winger John Salako (he is pictured above playing for the South East London club), youthful and exciting, was one of the new boys summoned by Graham Taylor for the 1991 tour of Australasia which was to be used for experimenting with fresh faces while resting the older legs. Salako featured in all four games (a 1-0 win against Australia, 1-0 and 2-0 victories versus New Zealand and a 4-2 success over Malaysia which saw Gary Lineker bag all four goals) and played well enough to be given a start when England returned home and took on Germany in a Wembley friendly prior to the serious business of completing the task of qualifying for the following summer's European Championships. He struggled a little more against a higher class of opposition, was substituted by debutant Paul Stewart, and didn't play for England again as Taylor looked towards Tony Daley and Andy Sinton as main providers of width for the injury-ridden John Barnes.
