When Dave Webb arrived at the Baseball Ground in December 1978, he was
well past his prime as a professional footballer. That said, the
thirty-two year old defender proved to be one of Tommy Docherty's best
ever short term transfer signings, his obvious lack of pace being more
than compensated for by years of experience and a seemingly unquenchable
enthusiasm for the game. Webb had played with the best, initially with
Southampton, most memorably with Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers and
most recently with Leicester City, amassing a total of 516 league
appearances by the time he arrived at the Baseball Ground.
The Rams
supporters loved him from the outset. Although injuries prevented him
from ever being a first team regular, they knew that whenever his name
appeared on the teamsheet, their side would not be defeated due to a
lack of effort. In the 1978/1979 season, Dave appeared in just ten
league games and netted his only goal for the club in a 2-1 defeat by
Nottingham Forest on April 14th 1979. The following year he played three
games early on, but then was not selected again until the 24th of
November - a return which inspired the Rams to their best performance of
the season; a 4-1 defeat of Forest at the Baseball Ground. Dave's last
game for County was in their 2-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur on
February 23rd 1980, an ankle injury in that fixture sidelining him for
the remainder of the season. Sadly for the Rams, it proved to be the
year they were relegated from the First Division. In all competitions,
Webb played twenty-nine times for County, including one appearance as a
substitute. In May 1980 he joined Bournemouth as a player coach -
becoming their manager seven months later. (Mike Cockayne).
