Alan SUNDERLAND - England - Biography 1980 England 'career'.

With his first choice squad resting prior to the European Championship finals - England's first major tournament for a decade - Ron Greenwood took the opportunity to call up a host of second-string players for a taste of the international game when England played Australia in Sydney. The game, just a fortnight before the championships, featured a whole host of players who were youthful, promising for the future, or just inexperienced at international level, and 26 year old Arsenal striker Alan Sunderland (he is pictured above playing for the Gunners in the year of his call-up) fell into the latter category. A sturdy goalscorer at Highbury and previously at Wolves, he was nonetheless thought to be no more than that until he was taken to Sydney and started the game. He didn't last the 90 minutes - fellow debutant Peter Ward replaced him - and neither player crossed Greenwood's mind again. (Matthew Rudd)
