Coventry City's lightning quick full back Danny Thomas (he is pictured above playing for the Sky Blues) was given two international caps by Bobby Robson in the summer of 1983 as he began looking for Phil Neal's long-term replacement. Thomas featured in two of the three games on the Australian tour, winning neither, but wasn't asked back even when Robson decided to dispense with Neal after England's interest in qualifying for the following summer's European Championships ended later the same year. Other right backs were available and Thomas upped his claims by earning a high-profile move to Tottenham which many suggested would make Robson look closely at him again. However, a highly-publicised ankle injury sadly ended his career at just 26 years of age, during which time Gary Stevens was already untouchable as England's prime No.2. (Matthew Rudd)
