Manchester City's marauding striker Dennis Tueart (he is pictured above playing for the Blues) received well-deserved England honours in 1975 after a successful first full season at Maine Road, in which he scored 14 goals. Don Revie pitched him into the team via the bench for the 1-0 win over Cyprus in a European Championship qualifier and then gave him a full debut in the Home International match against Northern Ireland a week later. Despite a memorable overhead kick in the following season's League Cup final, Tueart then went through a year of being unnoticed or not needed by Revie, although upon his return in October 1976, he responded with his first England goal in the 2-1 win over Finland which got the campaign to reach the 1978 World Cup underway in style. However, he was dropped for the next game as Revie played havoc with the formation for the trip to Italy, which England lost 2-0, and was only brought back for the 1977 Home Internationals. Tueart featured in all three - scoring in the 2-1 win over Northern Ireland - but didn't go on the summer tour of South America and was not picked again after Revie quit the job. (Matthew Rudd) |
