Wolves striker John Richards was a club hero
throughout the 1970s and the early part of the 1980s
and, like his Molineux successor Steve Bull, was
fearless in front of goal and rarely had a dry patch. His
immense finishing prowess in a decent Wolves side
deserved, in the eyes of many without an old gold bias,
more than the one England cap he attained in 1973 when
England beat Northern Ireland 2-1 in the Home
Internationals. Richards didn't look out of place but Alf
Ramsey chose not to try him again, and when Wolves were
relegated in 1976 and began a few years on a yo-yo
between the top two divisions, Richards' loyalty to the
Molineux cause possibly cost him a chance under Don
Revie or Ron Greenwood. |
