Keith WELLER - England - Biography 1974

Joe Mercer's bright stint as temporary England coach was a boon for forceful striker Keith Weller, who won all of his four caps during Mercer's seven-game spell at the helm. Weller, who'd made his name at Chelsea but had since joined Leicester City (he is pictured above playing for City a few months prior to his call-up), played every minute of the 1974 Home Internationals - scoring the only goal in the 1-0 win over Northern Ireland at Wembley - and was picked again for a subsequent friendly against Argentina. However, he didn't make the plane for a short tour of Eastern Europe - organised in haste after failure to qualify for the World Cup - and by the time that was over, Don Revie had been appointed. Although he called up a huge flow of different players, Weller didn't get another cap. (Matthew Rudd)
