Gary Lineker joined Everton in the summer of 1985, Howard Kendall paying Leicester City £800,000 to secure the services of the highly-rated striker. Remarkable as it now seems his reception on Merseyside was not a warm one amongst many Evertonians, the reason being that his arrival had meant the departure of terrace favourite Andy Gray.

Gary eventually won over the doubters, however, with his spectacular goalscoring exploits, helping himself to no less than 30 League goals. He then took this form on to the biggest stage of all - the World Cup Finals - and left the tournament as the winner of the Golden Boot, having topped the scoring charts with six goals.

Barcelona soon offered £2.5 million and Gary was on his way to the Nou Camp after just one season - albeit a memorable one - at Goodison.
