John joined Everton from Queens Park Rangers in March 1998, manager Howard Kendall paying £1.5m for the Scottish international striker. Spencer had initially joined the Blues on loan before the transfer deal went through. It proved to be a very short and disappointing stay on Merseyside for the little forward and he returned to his native Scotland with a move to Motherwell in January 1999.
