Goalkeeper Martin Hodge joined Everton in July 1979 for a fee of £135,000 from
Plymouth Argyle as understudy to George Wood. Such was the impression made
by the young newcomer that Wood was forced to take a backseat as Hodge established
himself in the starting XI in November 1979, going on to play in that season's FA Cup
semi-final defeat to West Ham Utd.
Thereafter he struggled to claim a place in the side
and moved on to Sheffield Wednesday for £50,000 in the summer of 1983.
He is pictured above during the 2-1 defeat against Middlesbrough.
