During the 1992-93 season Matthias played eleven games for Internazionale, scoring four goals. He returned to Germany that same season to play for Borussia Dortmund where he remained for the rest of his career retiring in the 1997/98 season - a decision forced upon him by a serious knee injury. He began his career at his home town club Dynamo Dresden for whom his father played and later managed. Matthias himself was later to go into football management. Born in the former East Germany he played for them in twenty three internationals and then for the unified Germany a further fifty one times. He scored fourteen international goals in total and eighty four in top class league football, the most, thirty nine, with Dresden.
