against Stoke City.

On 21st April 2023, Whymark's family announced he had been diagnosed with

Alzheimer's disease, from which he had been suffering since 2019. He died on

31st October 2024 aged 74.

Trevor Whymark was a talented and enigmatic striker with a fast-emerging Ipswich Town

(he is pictured above in action for the East Anglian club a few months prior to his call-up)

when he was called up by Ron Greenwood for the England squad which would face

Luxembourg in a crucial qualifier for the 1978 World Cup.

England were expetced to win but needed to do so by as considerable margin as possible

against the group whipping-boys in order to give themselves their best hope of qualifying

when pacesetters Italy visited Wembley a month later.

Whymark was put on the bench but with England struggling for potency, was sent on for

Terry McDermott to add a third striker to the set-up as England made a final push.

The game ended 2-0, not enough, and Whymark's on-off career with Ipswich meant

he missed the FA Cup final at the end of that season through injury

and never received another call-up by his country. (Matthew Rudd).
