Paul Madeley's career with the England football team 1971 - 1977.
Leeds fans who watched Paul Madeley's long and distinguished career at Elland Road (he is pictured above playing for the Yorkshire club in 1977) were always stumped as to which was his best position on the park, such was his uniqueness as a utility player. After all, he played as a striker, a winger, a central defender and in both full back positions in the many domestic and European finals his club reached between 1965 and 1975. But maybe scrutinising his England career provides the best answer, as the sizeable majority of his 24 caps, over a six year period, were at right back.
This wasn't a position he could occupy all too frequently at Leeds, due to the presence of Paul Reaney; a factor which meant he was only ever in the No.2 shirt when his team-mate was injured. Ironically, one such occasion could have been at the 1970 World Cup, when an impressed Alf Ramsey asked an uncapped Madeley to join his preliminary squad after seeing the way Madeley deputised for Reaney when Leeds' regular No.2 broke his leg and ruined his hopes of going to Mexico. Madeley politely declined, on the grounds that he needed a rest after an impossibly long and arduous season at Leeds, especially as he was unlikely to be anything more than an understudy if he made the England 22.
Ramsey didn't hold this rejection against him, and capped him for the first time in the 1971 Home Internationals - at right back - as England defeated Northern Ireland 1-0. Madeley played every position except goalkeeper at Leeds, and managed to feature in other positions for England - notably the centre back partner for Bobby Moore when the skipper won his 100th cap in February 1973 - but largely it was as a right back that he performed for his country, winning his final cap as a veteran in a 2-0 defeat to Holland at Wembley in 1977.
