Joe Mercer's short caretaker stewardship of England in the summer of 1974 gave Liverpool's sturdy, measured left back Alec Lindsay a surprise quartet of caps, all of which came in a swift fortnight. Lindsay, who had played magnificently in Liverpool's FA Cup final victory that month was called up for a friendly with Argentina at Wembley which ended 2-2, then started and ended all three of the tour games in the Eastern Bloc, while other countries were engaged in preparing for the World Cup. Two draws (1-1 versus East Germany and 2-2 against Yugoslavia) and a win (1-0 over Bulgaria) meant that Alec never lost in an England shirt, but the moment Don Revie took over as manager he recalled his old Leeds batman Terry Cooper to the No.3 shirt. Over the next 12 months Lindsay's selection at Liverpool became less frequent and his hopes of his bright but brief England career resuming were dashed. (Matthew Rudd) |
