His sons Michael and Paul have played professionally with Stoke, when Macari was manager of the club. 
His youngest son Jonathan committed suicide in 1999 after being released from his contract at Nottingham Forest.
Macari also owned the "Lou Macari Chip Shop" on Chester Road, near Old Trafford. He wrote his autobiography
 in October 2009 called Football, My Life.
Macari was portrayed by Scottish actor Tony Curran in the 2014 television film Marvellous, based on the life of former
 Stoke City F.C. kitman Neil Baldwin
