Mick Martin joined Manchester United in January 1973 from Irish League
team, Bohemians, for a fee of £25,000. He could play anywhere in
defence or midfield and even keep goal if required. Mick joined United
as part of the first batch of changes following the arrival of new
manager Tommy Docherty. When the young Irishman joined the club it
seemed certain they were heading for the 2nd Division having amassed a
mere 18 points in their first 26 games, losing half of them in the
process. Martin made his debut in a 0-0 draw with Everton on 24th
January 1973 and remained an ever present until the end of the season.
In those final 16 games, United more than doubled their points tally as
they found the results to keep them in the top flight. Martin's first
United goal came in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in March 1973
with his the decisive strike.
The following month he repeated the feat
in a 1-0 win against Norwich City. Docherty continued to change
personnel over the summer months but the following season proved
unsuccessful as United were relegated. Martin had retained his place in
the team at the start of that disappointing 73/74 season but as Docherty
attempted to find the right blend with his new recruits, his position
was taken. United continued to struggle however and the Irishman
returned to regular first team action towards the end of the season. As
it transpired, United won 7 of their 10 league games that season with
Mick in the team although he appeared in only 16 league games, 4 of
which were as a sub.
By 1975, and with further Docherty changes in
place, Mick became surplus to requirements. He played in only 9 matches
in the 1974/75 season as United made an immediate return to the First
Division. The following season he was loaned to West Bromwich Albion and
the move became permanent in December 1975. (Steve Drabble).
