Transferred to Newcastle United in August 1982 for whom he played just 12 league games before joining Darlington.
There he joined Cyril Knowles at Darlington as player coach.
He stayed for 3 years before leaving to become a car salesman at Shoreline cars in Redcar.
After a short spell there he was invited by Bobby Moncur to join Hartlepool as coach working alongside "Pop" Robson.
After finishing at Hartlepool John left football and joined Willie Maddren working for Willie in his Sports Shop.
After Willie's shop was taken over by Sport and Soccer- later to become
Sports Direct he joined them and worked for Sports Direct for over 20 years.
He settled in Teesside and lived in Eaglescliffe with his family.
