Michael O'Neill enjoyed a fine first season on Tyneside following his arrival in October 1987
from Irish club Coleraine. He netted 12 goals in just 21 league games, two of which were as
a sub, with his first goal for the Magpies coming in a 3-1 win at Oxford United on 5th December.
