Holden finished his career with Blackpool in 1995–96, then under the managership of Sam Allardyce.
He suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in February 1996 and failed to recover from it.
He had been playing for ten years without knowledge that he had ruptured his posterior
cruciate ligament in his right knee. In 1996, Holden and his family moved to Farmhill on the
Rick published his autobiography, Football – It's a Minging Life!, in 2010. (Mingan was the name of
the cat he adopted in late 1986, during his final year at Carnegie College.
Its name morphed into Minging, hence the title of the book. )
After releasing his autobiography, Holden became a partner in Wibble Publishing and went on to write
other sporting books.
